Doing More With Less

Former Disney CEO Michael Eisner once told a wonderful story about the  making of the movie Outrageous Fortune. According to Eisner, budget constraints on the film forced asking the writers to rework a scene where Shelley Long’s character has to ask her parents for money to study with a famous acting coach. The scene, as written, would have required an apartment set, on-screen actors, etc. The writers were furious at Disney, excoriating the company for being so “cheap.” After they calmed down, they took the opportunity to create one of the most memorable scenes in the movie. They used lack of budget, not as an excuse, but as a creative weapon. Watch how they did more with less.

There’s a quick intro and the scene runs about two minutes before cutting to the next one. Enjoy!
