Like many American business owners CEO Jim McCann of 1-800 Flowers.com has had his share of success and failure. When I interviewed Jim McCann on The CEO TV Show he described to me how he has been able to turn his mistakes into success and create the largest flower and gift company in the world.
I asked Jim how he built his business from his first flower shop.
“ I had a wonderful first career in social services with a home for teenage boys and this was a great training ground for business.” Jim explained. “ I think that no matter what business you are in your primary responsibility is to help people work as a team, feel good about themselves and set goals and objectives. Encourage them to achieve things that they couldn’t have achieved before.”
I asked Jim how he was able to utilize this experience when he became CEO of 1-800 Flowers.com and grow his business.
“ I’ve come to love being a florist and I love our products.” Jim replied “ But that’s not the reason I got into it. It was just a business that I could afford to get in to that was in retail and that I could understand.”
When I asked Jim about the obstacles that he had to face he was able to share some valuable insights in to turning failure into success with one common formula that can be applied to any business endeavor.
